50 bed infirmary is an on-base medical treatment facility providing complete medical care for military healthcare beneficiaries (active duty military personnel, their dependents, retirees in the vicinity of Turkish Air Force Academy (TUAFA)), sick and wounded during wartime and peacetime, and those who need to be checked, diagnosed, treated, operated and rehabilitated. One of our primary missions is flight readiness of the cadets according to the criteria. Medical treatment facility consists of two buildings with laboratory and radiology services and clinical departments with the highest quality comprehensive care. Our medical center provides a 24-hour availability for emergency services and ambulatory care. In order to prevent time wasting for the patients who are not active duty personnel, we have an “appointment system” for patient satisfaction on a continuous basis. In our infirmary we are committed to provide high-quality patient care through our clinical departments: internal diseases, psychiatry , dermatology, general surgery, urology, ear-nose-throat diseases (ENT), cardiology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, obstetrics-gynaecology (obs-gyn), flight surgeon, consultant pyhsician, dental departments, pharmacy and two operating rooms. Our medical center has a “Flight Health and Examination Center”.
This center conducts the medical examination of the military high school candidates and the medical examination of TUAFA candidates. In addition to these duties, this center also conducts pilotage medical examinations of sophomore and junior cadet’s annual checkups. These duties are performed in accordance with “TAF Sanitary Regulations and Directives”. According to the regulations all candidate cadets have to be in perfect health and should not have discromatopsia. Cadets who were treated through laser surgery for eyesight defects are not accepted. Length-weight proportion for military high schools is given in information brochures, and for TUAFA the minimum of length is 165 cm. In accordance with the sanitary regulations to determine cadets’ state of health there are some obligatory tests to be applied ; lung graphy, direct urinary system graphy (DUSG), HIV, Anti-HCV, VDRL, complete blood count (CBC), sedimentation rate, urinalysis, fasting glycemia, BUN, creatinine, ALT, AST. In addition to these tests, we perform further special examinations in order to reach higher standarts for pilotage such as ; ecocardiography, abdominal ultrasonography (USG), ECG, EEG (if neurologist requires), odiometry, Water’s graphy, servical and lumbosakral vertebra graphics, eye examination with cycloplegia, eyesight tests, all biochemical tests and blood type tests. The candidates and tests are then evaluated in internal diseases, cardiology, general surgery, orthopaedics, psychiatry, neurology, dermatology, obs-gyn (for female cadets), urology , ENT, dental and ophthalmology clinics. The results of these examinations are assessed by a board of doctors and the results are announced afterwards (usually on the same day). To sophomore and junior year cadets who are subject to periodic checkups, we apply Water’s graphy, DUSG, abdominal USG, ECG, CBC, urinalysis and then these cadets are examined by internal diseases, general surgery, urology/obs-gyn, ENT and dental departments. In case of detection of health problems that can be treated, medical and surgical treatments are planned. During their periodic checkups, a decision on pilotage eligibility is not considered. Senior cadets, on the other hand, are taken to their first pilotage medical examination before flight training. Following this extensive examination, the board determines whether the cadets are eligible for combatant jet pilot training or not. In the course of these medical exams, the cadets and the candidates have a right to object the decision. In such cases, those who object are directed to 2nd and 3rd control hospitals. Furthermore, in our facility we provide flight surgeon service. Within the responsibilities of flight surgeon service, keeping flight records and medical examination files, performing pilots’ daily flight exams are exercised. In cases of impediment to flight, pilots are cut off temporarily from flight. In addition to these, pilot officers with expired flight exam are sent to pertinent hospitals for annual and periodic-5-year –exams. Ophthalmology service offers comprehensive eye care including cataract, glaucoma, cross-eye and oculoplastic surgeries through both local and general anesthesia with contemporary equipment. NT service provides medical and surgical treatment for beneficaries using high technology equipment, and offers periodic health exams for active duty personnel. In our ENT service, audiology laboratory, a functional endoscopy sinus surgery set and endovision exams are also available. Within our infirmary, general surgery, urology and obs-gyn specialists also deal with emergency surgical situations.
